Home is Best

Research has shown that for people with dementia, living at home as long as possible, is not only desirable for health and economic reasons, but is also associated with a higher quality of life. Homecare provision plays a vital role in assisting the person with dementia to remain living at home and maintaining this higher quality of life. However, difficulties can arise due to different views of quality of life and pressures experienced by those involved in the care of the person with dementia. Managing this situation requires an understanding of the needs of the person with dementia, their family and the care support team in order to identify a way to resolve issues and find a pathway forward that accommodates everyone.
I have trained healthcare staff for the last 10 years and have specialised in the area of caring for people with dementia. I am aware of the difficulties that can arise due to stress, anxiety and a lack of understanding of what is happening and the changes that are taking place. It is important to equip families and carers with the knowledge and ability to recognise a deteriorating situation in order to get the support they need to avert a crisis situation.
