Family and Friends

The Irish National Dementia Strategy seeks to enable people with dementia to maintain their identity, resilience and dignity and recognising that they remain valued, independent citizens who, along with their carers, have the right to be fully included as active citizens in society. They also commit to caring for more people in their homes for as long as possible. Family and friends are critical to providing this care and ensuring the quality of life of the person living with dementia.
However, caring for a loved one living with dementia can present families and friends with challenges which can lead to stress and anxiety for everyone involved. Managing this situation requires an understanding of the needs of the person with dementia and also their family and friends in order to identify a way to resolve issues and find a pathway forward that accommodates everyone.
I have worked in dementia care for last 10 years and am aware of the difficulties that can arise due to stress, anxiety and a lack of understanding of what is happening and the changes that are taking place.
